How WPM Is Actually Calculated
Words per minute isn't about counting words — understand the 5-character standard and what net vs. raw speed really tells you.

Typing tests don't count literal words — "a" and "extraordinary" would make results meaningless. Instead, the industry standard defines one word as 5 characters, including spaces. Type 300 correct characters in 60 seconds and you've typed 60 WPM, no matter how long the individual words were.
Net WPM counts only correct characters, and it's the number that matters — it represents usable output. Raw WPM counts every keystroke including mistakes. If your raw speed is 80 but your net speed is 60, a quarter of your effort is going into typing — and then fixing — errors. That gap is your single biggest improvement opportunity.
The five-character standard, worked through
Say you finish a 60-second test having pressed 326 keys, 312 of them correct. Your net score is 312 correct characters ÷ 5 = 62.4 standardized words, typed in exactly one minute — 62 net WPM. Your raw score includes the misses: 326 ÷ 5 ≈ 65 raw WPM. And your accuracy is 312 of 326 keystrokes, or 95.7%. Notice that the spaces between correctly typed words count as correct characters too — finishing a word properly, space included, is part of the skill being measured.
On shorter tests the same math is scaled: 156 correct characters in 30 seconds is 31.2 words in half a minute, which projects to 62 WPM. That's why a 15-second sprint and a 2-minute run can be compared directly — both are normalized to a per-minute rate.
Why different tests report different numbers
If you've ever scored 70 WPM on one site and 55 on another, neither is lying — they're measuring different things. Four design choices explain almost all of the spread:
- The word list. Tests built from short, common words produce higher scores than tests with rare words, capital letters, punctuation, or numbers. Neither is wrong; they're different difficulty levels.
- The error penalty. Some tests subtract a full word from your score per mistake. Others — including this one — simply don't credit the incorrect characters. Subtractive scoring reads dramatically lower for the same typing.
- What happens to corrections. Some tests forgive an error once you backspace and fix it. Here, accuracy is scored per keystroke as you press it, so a fixed mistake still shows up in your accuracy — which is what makes error patterns visible instead of hiding them.
- The clock and the last word. Some tests discard the word you were in the middle of when time ran out. This site uses wall-clock timing and scores your final partially-typed word, so no keystroke is wasted.
The practical rule: only compare scores from the same test. Your history on this site is measured identically every run, which is what makes your weekly trend meaningful.
Reading your own numbers
For context: everyday computer users average 35–45 WPM, 50–70 WPM is comfortable for professional work, and 100+ puts you in the top few percent of typists. But the more useful comparison is you versus you — a stable net WPM with rising accuracy, or a shrinking gap between raw and net, is real progress even when the headline number hasn't moved yet.
Practical takeaway: if net and raw WPM are close together, push your speed. If they're far apart, slow down — your fingers are writing checks your accuracy can't cash.
